Surrey Mark Charity Golf Day

The Surrey Mark Charity Golf Day was held at Woldingham Golf Course on the 20th May. It was a wonderful day’s golf with 72 players, who were accompanied by six dinner guest afterwards. A great day with some incredible scores and some not so incredible scores but good fun was had by all. The Provincial Grand Master guaranteed a dry day, and just about stuck to his promise – that’s two years running now!

The single prize went to Mr Jeff Gower with a magnificent score of 47 points and needless to say the team prize also went to team Gower – consisting of Jeff and his brother Calvin along with Sean Howe and Mark Holmes from the Isle of Wight. The team score was 133 points which was always going to be difficult to beat! In 2nd place was Jonny Watson with 41 points and in 3rd place was Mark Vincent with 39 points – all very respectable scores!

The strongest team holding up the rest was captained by W.Bro. Len Hillier – well played Len and team Hillier for being such good sports and supporting the event again, and put in a sterling effort. 10 out 10 for a never say die attempt. It’s the taking part that counts!

Longest drive – was won by W Bro Tony Callister of Percy Mark Lodge No 114 – presumably one of the best Mark Lodges in Surrey?

Nearest the pin in two - was won by Carl Newton. It was his first time playing in this golf day with 3 of his friends and he will be supporting us again next year!

Representing the Ladies – Joan Oldroyd flew the flag for the Ladies taking part and scored a very credible 38 points. Joan was also in the team that came 2nd on the day with 122 points so the guys in her team will have to try harder next year…..mention no names Trevor Sadler!

Star of the day – Bill French, John French’s dad, for beating the Pro on the 15th hole, par 3. The pro said it was his best shot of the day but he couldn’t better Billy boy who left his ball 6 inches from the hole and at 86 years of age that wasn’t too bad. He has however threatened to hang up the clubs but we’ll wait and see what happens next year! We will have to find a better Pro next year to put him under pressure!

The Provincial Grand Master of the Mark Province of Kent, RW.Bro. Archie Torrance, equalled the Pro at this hole. Our Provincial Grand Master declared Archie the winner.

We then sat down to an enjoyable meal at the Woldingham Golf Club where we were joined by some non golfers.

A successful raffle with some superb prizes, which were kindly donated, along with an excellent auction will ensure that the Charity Golf Day will again raise £3,000 - final numbers to be confirmed.

Special thanks and appreciation go to W.Bro. Mark Guzam for sponsoring the trophies; Stanley Howe for sponsoring the main trophy; and the many auction items supplied by Natta Construction, Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire and W.Bro. John French.
