A busy afternoon at Sutton

In January 2019, Welcome Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners and Mark Master Masons No. 1237 along with Pride of Surrey Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners and Mark Master Masons No. 1728 were meeting on the same day in the two Temples at the Sutton Masonic Hall. As Welcome RAM Lodge had a candidate for elevation and Pride of Surrey Mark Lodge had two candidates for advancement I thought I would go along to support them. W.Bro. Tim Ford, PGStwd, our Provincial Grand Secretary was attending the Pride of Surrey Lodges as their Official Visitor.

My afternoon started off with the Welcome Lodge Royal Ark Mariners meeting where the Worshipful Commander, W.Bro. Stephen Hall, welcomed everyone and then invited W.Bro. Miguel Godfrey to take the Chair to elevate Bro. Mathew Platts a member of Welcome Lodge of Mark Master Masons. This was conducted in an excellent manner by W.Bro. Miguel and the Officers of the Lodge.

W.Bro. Brian Osment was declared Worshipful Commander and W.Bro. Richard Knox as Treasurer for the ensuing year.

Meanwhile, in the large Temple the Pride of Surrey Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners was holding its meeting. W.Bro. Tim Ford, Provincial Grand Secretary, was welcomed by the Worshipful Commander W.Bro. Stuart Smith. After the regular business of the Lodge was completed the Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners was closed and a Lodge of Mark Master Masons was opened.

W.Bro. Tim Ford, was welcomed by the Worshipful Master, W.Bro. Michael Lawrence. W.Bro. Chris Wates was declared Worshipful Master and W.Bro. Michael Clothier as Treasurer for the ensuing year.

A ballot for Advancement was conducted in respect of Brothers Anthony Friend and Keith Mitchell, Master Masons of Operative Lodge No 8783. This proved in their favour and Bros. Anthony and Keith were admitted and advanced to the Honourable Degree of a Mark Master Mason by W.Bro. Roy Baker, and the officers of the Lodge in an excellent manner.

The Signs were demonstrated by W.Bro. Gary Raggett, the Working Tools were explained by W.Bro. Peter Kipps, and the Charge was given by W.Bro. Tim Ford. I was then invited to present Grand Lodge Certificates to Brothers Edward Terry and Mark Carter who were advanced together at the Lodge’s September meeting.

It was encouraging to see so many Mark Master Masons being advanced into Pride of Surrey Lodge – four in two meetings.

I then left the Pride of Surrey Mark Lodge and made my way downstairs to Welcome Lodge to present a Mark Grand Lodge Certificate to Brother Matthew Platts, who had been elevated into the Royal Ark Mariner Degree an hour earlier.

After closing the Lodge and taking the customary Lodge photos the members of Welcome Lodge and their guests dined together at the Sutton Masonic Hall.

Welcome Lodge and Pride of Surrey Lodge are members of the Mann Group of Lodges meeting at Sutton and an open invitation is always there for other Brethren to join them.
