A team of willing volunteers from the Mark Stewards Lodge turned up early to set up the stalls. These included a Tombola, Children’s Toys, a Guess the Weight of the Cake, Total Runs Scored on the Day, Second Hand Paperback Books and a Win a Bottle of Wine – which had to be collected at 500 feet. Soon after stalls were set up the helicopter arrived piloted by our own Captain Peter Unwin. The Aérospatiale Gazelle is a helicopter, commonly used for light transport, scouting and light attack duties.

At 10:30 the first cricket match between Sussex and Kent started. Sussex scored 95 runs for 2 wickets off 10 Overs and Kent scored 45 runs for 7 wickets off 10 Overs. Sussex won by 50 runs.

The next match was between Surrey/Middlesex and Kent. Surrey/Middlesex scored 60 runs for 3 wickets off 10 Overs and Kent scored 62 runs for 3 wickets off 8.5 Overs. Kent won by 7 wickets (or 2 runs).

The third match was between Sussex and Surrey/Middlesex. Sussex scored 72 runs for 3 wickets off 10 Overs and Surrey/Middlesex scored 64 runs for 3 wickets off 10 Overs. Sussex won by 8 Runs and were the winners of the tournament.

The draw for the bottle of wine took place and the three lucky winners made their way over to the helicopter to collect their prize. One of the prize-winners was Ian Keen of Kintore Mark Lodge who was the lucky person to sit up front with Peter Unwin. They had a wonderful flight to Heaver Castle and back – a day they will not forget for a long time.

Following tea and cake, the day closed with the presentation ceremony lead by our Provincial Grand Master, RW. Bro. Ian Clark and accompanied by RW. Bro. Martin Wilson, Provincial Grand Master for Sussex, and the Executive from the Provinces of Middlesex and Kent.
  • The Man of the Tournament was awarded to Callum Matthews of Middlesex
  • The Champagne Moment and the Bill Balderston cup was awarded to Jeff Gower of Surrey
  • The Tom Auld Trophy was awarded to Sussex
A big thank you to Roy Baker and Tim Ford for organising the event so well, along with all those helpers who turned up to man the gate and run the stalls on the day. A big thank you also to VW.Bro. Jerry Gangadeen, AProvGM of the Mark Province of London, for baking a special cake for the event. We all look forward to next year’s Cricket Festival and Family Day Out hosted by Sussex in Ardingly.
